My manager asked me to post this here. We _MIGHT_ be having a position
opening up. We are very "bare bones" as far as staffing in concerned. My
boss is interested in a "generalist" who can do z/OS work, some CICS, and
some program products. We do not have assigned jobs. It's kind of "can you
do this now?" type. If you've read other posts, you'll know we're really
rather stable. I can't guarantee that we will (or won't) stay this way. I
would love to upgrade z/OS and CICS, but it's "who knows?" on if or when.

We are on a z9BC, but might upgrade to a z12BC next year. Just _might_.
We run z/OS 1.12 with no plans that I know of to upgrade.
We run CICS/TS 4.2, again with no plans that I know of to upgrade.
We run MQSeries 6.0 (same disclaimer).
We run CA-1, CA-7, CA-11. We generally stay more up to date on these.
We use COBOL 4.2 (same disclaimer)
We have z/OS UNIX fully operational, but it is not used much except by
myself.
We have the old Domino based HTTPD server running for a few special things.
We run a number of older products under a "permanent execution" type
license. These include BMC Mainview & something called "PowerConnect". This
latter is a product which allows "SQL like" queries to selected VSAM data
sets out to their own client on Windows. I don't know much about it.

The boss wants somebody local. That is, this is not for a "remote only"
type person. We do have some here who work from home on occasion, but we
like to be in "cubical communications" distance of each other.

The company is HealthMarkets. The address is 9151 Highway 26; N. Richland
Hills, TX 76180

That's about all that I know. Oh, I think I should also say "Principals
only".

If interested, call William (Bill) Story at 817-255-3224 (obviously after
Memorial Day).

Yeah... So John what do you guys do about system fixes, maintenance ?
Didn't look at email over the Labor Day weekend.

For IBM software, basically z/OS and it's "included" products such as RACF
and DFSORT, we would on a RECEIVE FROM NETWORK when IBM put up a new RSU.
But we would only install selected PTFs if we were experiencing a problem
or it as a "hiper" type situation. Our normal method of z/OS maintenance
was to reorder z/OS & associated products; install & test on the sandbox;
then create a new set of RES & CAT volume from those - IPL & test on a
Sunday, then "go / no go". However, we basically were told to "stabilize"
z/OS when we were "going to the cloud", so I stopped "wasting" MSUs by
"downloading unneeded maintenance". I am not sure exactly what we will do
in the future. I am hoping that we will simply order z/OS 2.3. But there
are some problems with that in that we have a "permanent execution" license
for some system level vendor products. I'm fairly sure these levels of
software will not run on z/OS 2.3. I don't know what we would do if we "had
to" upgrade z/OS. The company remains very cost conscience. And that area
(money) is totally outside my purview & knowledge.

The other main IBM software is CICS Transaction Server. We are 4.2. I
don't really know what is going to happen to this product either. What we
have does the job for us. So justifying the increased cost to go to 5.4
seems unlikely. Our applications are basically fairly simple COBOL
programs. That is, they don't need any of the new facilities in 5.4 (or
even earlier).

We basically did the same with vendor products. But the "cloud sourcing"
only slowed down our implementations. We have upgraded CA-Datacom/AD &
CA-11, & are finishing up CA-7 (delayed due to vacation).

We are not, never have been, nor are ever likely to be "on the edge".
